Notes of interest about SJHS

San Jose High School has a long and storied history; some of those moments are chronicled below:

The first graduating class on record was in 1873 with 8 graduates.

From 1902-1951, a total of 50 midyear classes were graduated in January or February.

There have been 34 principals, but only one served twice:  Basil Huffman.

SJHS's original colors were royal purple and white.

Crimson and grey were first used in 1941.

The first graduating class to attend Disneyland's all night party was the class of 1975.

The mosaics on the columns ringing senior lawn were begun in the spring of 1976 and completed in the winter of 1977.

The last SJHS marching band was in 1979.

The mosaic on the main gym's outside wall was completed in 1982.

Gloria Mendez began work as SJHS's attendance clerk in the 1989-90 school year.

Jessica Carey was the first IB Diploma graduate in 1989.

Aviation/Aerospace with a flight simulator offered for the first time in 1991.

Paul Eschstruth c/o 57 was SJHS's first National Merit Scholar.

SJHS cheer won the American Masterpiece San Jose Competition 2008-9 and the

American Showcase Anaheim Competition 2011-12.

Helmut Hermann c/o 58 was our first foreign exchange student.

The IB Program was instituted in 1987. 

The first Big Boot game and win was in 1969.

The first Little Boot game and win was in 1990.

The first Big Cleat game and win was in 1994.

The first Little Cleat game and win was in 1994.
